Looking for the best tummy time mat for your baby? You're in the right place. Here we explain what tummy time is, when to start and why the mat you choose makes a real difference.
What is tummy time?
Tummy time is the time your baby spends on their tummy while awake and supervised. Lying on their front, they work the muscles of the neck, shoulders, back and arms – the same ones they'll need to lift their head, roll over, sit up, crawl and walk.
Why does it matter so much?
Paediatricians recommend that babies always sleep on their back. But spending all their time in the same position can lead to a flat spot on the head (plagiocephaly). Tummy time balances this out and strengthens the muscles your baby needs to develop.
When can you start?
From day one. At first, a minute or two on your chest is enough. Build up gradually: by two to three months, around 30 minutes a day spread over short sessions is a good guide.
Why the tummy time mat matters
A cold, hard floor is uncomfortable and cuts sessions short. A surface that's too soft can be dangerous. And a foam mat puts plastic against your baby's delicate skin. The ideal tummy time mat is firm but padded, stable, made of natural materials and washable.
The perfect tummy time mat: cotton outside, natural wool inside. No polyester, and washable.

Cotton against the skin and wool as the padding give firmness without hardness and comfort without sinking in – with no synthetics at all. It's the ideal combination for a play mat that goes with your baby from day one to their first steps. And even though it's wool, it's washable.
Tips for happy tummy time
Put your baby on their tummy when they're content and well rested. Lie down at their eye level and talk to them. A shatterproof mirror helps. Start with very short sessions and build up gradually.
