A baby spends thousands of hours in direct contact with the mat. The surface they spend that time on is not a detail.
What to avoid
Polyurethane foam
The most common filling in mass-market mats. It emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that build up in closed rooms. With the heat of the baby's body, this emission increases.
Polyester fibre
Microplastic that can be released into the environment through use and washing.
EVA and XPE without certification
They may contain phthalates and formaldehyde. Always check for OEKO-TEX certification before buying.
Maison Theo: zero foam, zero polyester. Cotton and natural wool. OEKO-TEX certified.

100% cotton outside
Hypoallergenic, breathable and emission-free. Check that it is 100% cotton, not a blend with synthetics.
Natural wool as filling
Cushions better than foam, is inherently dust-mite resistant and antibacterial, and regulates temperature.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification
It certifies that all components have been tested and contain no harmful substances.
