It is one of the questions we get asked most. Wool has a reputation for itching, being rough and causing allergies. But there is a fundamental difference between the wool you know from clothing and the untreated natural wool used as filling in a baby play mat.
What types of wool are there?
Chemically treated wool
Most wool in mass-market clothing has been treated with chemicals to soften it or make it washable. These processes can leave residues that irritate the skin.
Untreated natural wool
This is what we use at Maison Theo as the inner filling of the mat. It never comes into direct contact with your baby's skin – the outer cotton always does that.
At Maison Theo the wool is on the inside. Your baby's skin always touches the cotton.

A true wool allergy is extraordinarily rare – below 1% of the population. What is often mistaken for an allergy is the mechanical irritation of coarse fibres on sensitive skin. This does not happen when the wool is not in direct contact with the skin.
Properties of natural wool
Dust-mite resistant without chemical treatment. Naturally antibacterial. Naturally flame resistant. Thermoregulating in both directions.
