The play mat is one of the first things a family buys. There are hundreds of options, huge price ranges and little clear information about which materials are truly safe.
What the mat is for at each stage
In the first months it is the tummy time space. From 3–4 months, the space for exploring and rolling. From 6–7 months, when crawling starts, it needs traction, firmness and a baby that does not slip.
Materials: the most important decision
EVA or XPE foam
The cheapest and best sellers. They are plastic and may contain phthalates and formaldehyde. Always look for OEKO-TEX certification.
Cotton with natural wool filling
The optimal combination. Cotton is hypoallergenic and breathable. Natural wool cushions better than foam, regulates temperature and is naturally dust-mite resistant.
Maison Theo: 100% cotton outside, 100% wool inside. OEKO-TEX certified. Made in Barcelona.

A mat that is too small stops being useful within months. For the first two years it should measure at least 100x100 cm so your baby has plenty of room to roll and crawl without leaving the safe zone. Our 110x110 cm mat is designed to cover that stage with room to spare.
Questions to ask yourself before buying
What materials does it have and where was it made? Does it have OEKO-TEX certification? Can it be machine washed? Is the manufacturer transparent about the materials?
The play mat a mother would make for her child.
